End your dinner on a high note with this delicious dessert.
This is a traditional recipe from my hometown of Medias in Transylvania, Romania.
Enjoy!
romanian apple pie
Ingredients
Pastry
200g unsalted butter
300g all-purpose flour
100g granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 tsp baking powder
1 egg
pinch of salt
Filling
2kg apples, peeled and grated
200g granulated sugar
2 tsp cinnamon powder
For dusting
100g powdered sugar
Method
Put the apples and sugar in a pot and cook them on a medium to low heat with the lid on, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has reduced and the apple sauce thickened.
Take the pot off the stove and add the cinnamon. Leave to cool.
In the meantime mix all the ingredients for the dough, wrap in cling film and leave to rest in the fridge for 15 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 180C.
Once the dough is rested, divide it in half and roll out both pieces into two thin sheets.
Grease a rectangular pie form (mine is 25/25cm) , place one piece of the dough on the bottom and prick it with a fork.
Spread the apple mixture evenly on it and top with the second piece of pie dough.
Prick the top crust with a fork as well and place the pie in on a middle rack in the oven.
Bake for about 40-50 minutes or until golden brown.
Dust with powdered sugar as soon as you take it out of the oven.
